Here is some choice snippets from the past two Middle Class Rut shows in Sacramento. The second video was shot at Harlows on Thursday, July 30th. The band headlined the show alongside friends The Feeling Mutual, Cawzlos, Chase Moore and Early States. The show at Harlows will be the last for the band state side for the time being as they prepare to head to the UK to play the massive Redding Festival later this month.

Santigold Goes Boom In Sacramento

Santigold kicked off the second date of her first national tour sponsored by Filter Magazine in Sacramento on Friday, May 22nd at the Empire Event Center. I arrived just in the nick of time to catch the excitement that was in the air that built into a dubbed out explosion once she took the stage that evening. Santigold came into town accompanied by a full band that switched between live instruments and programmed drum machines and synthesizers.

In addition to that she had two sweet robot like dancers who really added some spicey flavor to the show. Their synch in movements on stage helped egg on the feverish and frenzied crowd that evening. According to the setlist I scored post show (thanks to my homie Chris) Santigold is throwing a Cure and Pixies covers into live sets. This night she deviated from the list and invited Amanda Blank on stage to do a cover of L.L Cool J's song I Need Love. Check the madness of the night in the video below.

Keane Returns to The West Coast

Keane returned to the west coast to kick off the North American leg of their Perfect Symmetry Tour on Friday, May 8th at the Fox Theater in Oakland. The show opener Helio Sequence from Portland, OR was an added bonus for me on this concert bill their 45 min set include some solid cuts of their current cd Keep Your Eyes Ahead. Keane soaked up all the energy and California flavor that the crowd offered them that evening during their almost 2 hour set. They opened the show with Everybody Changing and continued to plow full steam ahead with raw abandonment and reckless passion. Bat For Lashes Channels Her Inner Teen Wolf on Letterman

I first caught wind of Natasha Khan AKA Bat For Lashes when I heard the plaid skirt remix of Whats A Girl To Do in the fall of 2006. I dug the track so much at the time that my good friend Derek Moore played it on his Indie Blog Heaven show that airs on Sunday nights from 7 pm to 8 pm on KWOD 106.5 in Sacramento, CA. I was not aware that the band had dropped a new album but was blown away last night when they popped up on David Letterman playing their new single Daniel. Natasha was channeling her inner teen wolf by sporting a intense hair shirt/necklace accessory. This track just made me want to jump off the couch and groove hard like it was 1987 needless to say I picked up the album Two Suns today and have been stuck on this great nugget of a song all day. This track seems to have late 80′s overtones and it did not suprise me to learn that she did a cover of A Forest on Manimal Vinyl’s Cure tribute record Perfect As Cats as you can hear the influence on this song. Death Cab For Cutie played to a packed house at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium this past Monday. The band was in town promoting their new EP The Open Door. They included a few tracks of the new EP in their setlist that evening. This show took me back when I hit the merch table and bought myself a copy their album You Can Play These Songs With Cords because I realized I first heard that album back in 98/99 and I was like damn has it been 10+ years…just goes to show how long DCFC have been staying the course and creating music on their own terms. Eric Avery Returns To Jane’s Addiction Next Up The Road

Alot of shit went down in 97 none of which I really remember clearly except when the Jane’s Addiction Relapse tour was announced on MTV that summer. It would be the first time the band had played together since they broke up in 1991. I had hoped for a reunion since 95 when my friend Adan turned me on to the band. The one exception no Eric Avery on bass due to his work with his new band Polar Bear. The band asked Flea to take his place for the short east to west coast tour, that started on Halloween night in New York and ended in SF at the mind bending E.N.I.T festival. So now we are in the age of Aquarius the 21st century and Jane’s Addiction has returned united with all its original members who are rumored to be working in the studio with Trent Reznor. They hit the road this May with NIN and Tom Morello and Boots Riley’s new band Streetsweeper. Enjoy the Classic Jane’s Joint My Fave Three Days Below

Kool Keith Hands Out Porno In Downtown Sacramento

Kool Keith and Kutmaster Kurt came to set the record straight when they brought the Dr.Dooom vs Dr.Octagon tour to Harlows last Thursday, Feb 26th. Kutmaster Kurt warmed the folks in the packed house with a 30 min set that kicked off with a Bizmarkie and Motion Man produced track followed by a classic JB sample. Everyone in Halows was reactive to Kurt’s “Hold Up” call with a zealot like “Wait A Minute” response. Once the scene was warmed up Kool Keith dropped out to do what he does best and took time to give love to Pimp C and handed out some porno movies for real like VHS format shits you used to buy over at the video clearance center…..Ya thats about the word on the scene one last note from the man himself “Keep It Real Represent What My Nuts”

Cheech and Chong Burn It Up In Sacramento

So like most kids from my generation and cultural background, I was exposed to Cheech and Chong at an early age by my father. What age you ask? Well I was far too young to understand the inside jokes that refered to that sweet lady Mary Jane. Yet as I grew up I came to embrace these counter culture icons after countless times of listening to their records and watching their movies. So it was with great suprise that I found myself at their show at the Memorial Auditorium this past Sunday, Jan 25th. Even after 30 years apart these guys still kill it. Fountains of Wayne go Acoustic in S.F

I jumped into the ride and took a trip down to the S.F to catch a show. My buddy and I are both really big Fountains of Wayne fans and we both feel they are one of the best power pop bands to come out in the last decade. Although some might pan them due to the success of their single Stacey’s Mom which was a great song/video but by no means is that song the yardstick to judge the band by if your sitting in your critics chair.

In anycase the band played an acoustic set at Cafe De Nord to a sold out crowd. Once again I made some moves and snagged the setlist they played a few new tracks and let everyone know their working on a new album. Too Much Fun At Far

So its been about 10 years since the boys in Far broke up. I remember hearing that they had broken up the summer before moving away to Humboldt County and was disappointed that I never had the chance to see them live. So finally I had my chance and I must say the sold out show at Empire last Thursday January 15th was most festive maybe even too festive for me. I started out the evening knocking a few cold ones back at my friends house and then had a late sushi dinner at Rickshaws. Now I’m all about sushi don’t get me wrong but as some of you drinkers might know its not the best base for a night that might involve the consumption of many strong drinks. In anycase 12 beers later maybe a few shots give or take…I found myself in the mix at Empire for the sold out show. I had a kick ass time that night just feeling the vibe of the entire crowd, who like me had been waiting for a few years to see the reformation of this band. In my altered state I was able to snag some footage and with the assistance of friends grab the set list. I must state for the record the next day I felt like I had been kicked in the face by a small calf or maybe mauled a wildcat hiding in the bushes on the corner of R and 14th street but it was all worth it to catch FAR.
